For some, the holidays can feel heavy, especially for those navigating mental health challenges or substanceuse. Here are some real ways to support yourself throughout the next couple of weeks:
Log off completely, or mute social media accounts that don’t make you feel good.
Say "no" without feeling bad — you don’t have to attend every event.
Check in with your body: breathe, ground yourself, and remind yourself you’re safe.
Redefine ‘togetherness’ — whether it’s with friends or in your own space with a good movie or audiobook.
If you're feeling sad, reach out to someone you trust, or if in crisis, text 9-8-8 or visit connexontario.ca.
If you’re navigating substance use, have a plan. If certain people, places, or situations put you at risk, it’s okay to avoid them.
Give back if you can. Sometimes, supporting others can remind us of our own strength. Whether it’s volunteering, checking in on a friend, or being kind to a stranger — small acts of care have big ripple effects.
If you’re feeling like you’re carrying too much, remember: You don’t have to figure out the whole holiday season right now. Take it one moment, one hour, one breath at a time.
