New Year’s resolutions are often built on the idea of reinvention. But to come at it from a mental health-forward perspective, the trick may be to navigate the year with more intention, and a lot more self-compassion.
So how do you make resolutions that keep your mental health in mind? Let’s start with a different approach to goal-setting. Example - say you’re looking into mindfulness: “I’ll meditate for an hour every day” might sound aspirational, but "I’ll take five minutes for deep breaths when I’m stressed" could be more sustainable.
It’s also important to note that your needs and circumstances will shift throughout the year, and your resolutions should, too. Give yourself permission to adjust or even drop goals that no longer serve you. Within any goal you set for yourself, try to:
1. Celebrate the small wins.
2. Acknowledge the moments when you’re showing up for yourself. Maybe it’s resisting theurge to scroll on your phone before bed or taking five minutes to pause and check in with your feelings. These little victories are the foundation of a more sustainable 2025.
So, no, you don’t need to reinvent yourself this year. Just resolve to be real — to accept that it’s okay to have hard days, to take things one step at a time, and to actually do what’s in your best interest. And reach out (and accept) support when you need it.

Amanda Bishop is a very helpful worker. She has changed my life for the better thank you. I don’t know what you pay her but she deserves a raise. She helps so many people.
New Year’s Eve can bring out a lot of pressure to make big plans, to go out, or to somehow transform into a “better” version of yourself overnight. And if you’re navigating mental health challenges or substance use, that pressure can feel even louder.
But here’s the good news: You can decide how you want to step into the new year—whether that means leaving a party if it feels overwhelming or making a plan to stay safe if you’re living with a substance use disorder or in active recovery. And remember, asking for help is always an option.
If things feel heavy, support is always within reach: 📞 Call or text 9-8-8 for 24/7 crisis support.💻 Visit connexontario.ca to find resources near you.
This New Year, you don’t need to be “brand new.” Just keep showing up. Keep being here. Andthat? That’s already something incredible. Because you are #SomeonesSomeone.
(And if you’re looking for some practical tips on setting manageable resolutions, stay tuned).
